Chapter 291: Spiritual Plane
Chapter 291: Spiritual Plane
Dragons were proud creatures. Very arrogant, actually. They never bowed before anyone. Aegon knew that very well. The pact formed between a Dragon Rider and a Dragon was a bond between friends, contrary to what many people thought.
Dragons weren’t pets or slaves of Dragon Riders. They were companions, so they never bowed their heads in complete submission, even to their Dragon Rider.
However, there was an exception.
The Valerian lineage.
The one bloodline to which even arrogant dragons bowed. But it wasn’t easy to achieve. That was a major part of the trial for a Valerian to become the true Supreme of House Valeria.
They needed to make at least ten dragons submit to them. That was why Aegon hadn’t taken it yet, as he wasn’t confident and there was also the matter of the time it would take.
Yet, a dragon was lowering her head before him, submitting herself completely. And he hadn’t even done anything. That shocked him the most.
"What?" Aegon came back to his senses and looked down at Virginia. "Are you sure about this?"
In return, he got a soft grunt.
Closing his eyes, he entered his Sea of Consciousness. There he found turbulent sea waves crashing against many islands, mostly his own. But there was a barrier protecting them.
Soon, the waves began to calm down and he could finally make out a distant island. In no time at all, the island was beside him. Space and time didn’t exist here like they did in physical reality.
Here, they were just representations, just like the sea and islands around him weren’t real, physical constructs. Since neither existed, one could cover any distance in any amount of time.
One could walk for eternity and they would have just taken a step. Or the opposite too. Take a step forward and you would be an infinite distance away.
All because distance didn’t matter here. One travelled through intent, and that was how the island arrived before him in no time.
Atop the island sat a red dragon, looking at him. Aegon smiled. "Are you sure about it?"
Just like other things, communication also happened through intent. There existed no medium for exchanging sounds otherwise.
"Gehs!" the red dragon said, which he translated as yes.
It was the draconic language that they only spoke in the Spiritual Plane to communicate with other creatures. Actually, other creatures were the same.
As everything originated here, making them similar to one another, they could try to understand each other much better.
"I don’t know what made you take this decision, but I promise you won’t regret it," Aegon said.
In response, the dragon snorted and went back to sleep.
Aegon also returned to his physical shell and opened his eyes. Virginia was still before him, her head lowered to the ground. She really had submitted to him. It felt surreal.
"How did you do that?" Nora asked, standing beside him. As Virginia’s companion, she knew her the best, so she was still in disbelief.
Aegon didn’t answer, but hypotheses began to form in his head. He made sure his mind didn’t wander in the wrong direction again.
’System, who could survive that pressure?’
[At least an 8th Circle Soul Cultivator, or demigods.]
He sucked in a cold breath. No wonder he had felt death so close. That made him think of something. ’Dragons are very sensitive in matters of the soul, so could it be that Virginia detected what happened?’
It was entirely possible and would also explain her actions. If she noticed him, a puny human, survive something of that level, then it wasn’t a surprise that she gave in.
’I am probably right, though my past behaviour may also be part of it.’
He went forward and gently patted her long, narrow snout. "Thanks for your trust, buddy."
Turning towards Nora, he added, "I won’t steal her from you, you know."
"N-No! It’s not about that," Nora hurriedly shook her head and said. "Still, this is better. Now I can entrust her to you. Good luck on your trip. Call me if something like that happens again."
With that, she withdrew into the mansion.
Aegon turned towards Elara and said, "Well, it didn’t start well, but I promise the rest will be worth it."
"We can call it off, you know," Elara said, still worried. "We can do this some other day. Your health matters more. Actually, we should have someone check you first."
Aegon went towards her, grasped her hands, and said softly, "Believe me. I’ve learned a lot in the arts of Soul Cultivation, and I can say I’m fine. Damaging the soul is very difficult and unlike how it happens in our reality."
"Shh! Don’t go there again." Elara put her fingers on his lips.
Aegon gently kissed them and said, "Then, please, be my date."
Elara stared into his eyes and felt helpless. "I hate you. You know I can’t reject you if you look at me like that."
Before he could rejoice, she added, "But we’re only continuing if you promise me you’ll get checked afterwards. What if there are some hidden injuries or something?"
Taking out a purple vial from her pouch, she gave it to him and said, "Also drink this. It’ll help."
Without any hesitation, he chugged down the purple liquid and asked, "Better? Now, can we leave?"
Elara nodded with a smile. She took a step forward, but Aegon put his hand forward, which she gladly took, feeling warmth spreading through her being.
Aegon took her closer to Virginia, or rather to her nape, where Nora had someone install a saddle. It was big enough to house both of them and offered enough safety too.
He helped her climb up and then jumped to his position as well, which was a comfortable seat behind Elara. He gave a mental thumbs-up to Nora for this arrangement.
’Best one. I’ll treat her later.’
He circled his arm around her waist and asked, "Shall we go?"
She hummed in response, a little nervous.
Aegon grasped Virginia’s scale with his other hand and thought, ’No more overthinking today. The whole day is for Elara.’
With that, Aegon tried riding a dragon for the first time.
