Chapter 124 124: The Last Seat
Chapter 124 124: The Last Seat
A handsome man is a fearsome liability to everyone but himself.
Jammy sat on a stair, staring at the wall with a face that was all too serious.
The seriousness rubbed off to everyone present and Zane asked the janitor what was the matter.
Jammy revealed that he needed to know something important for the mission.
Zane obliged and asked the man what it was.
And Jammy replied:
"Am I really not handsome?"
"…"
Zane's words failed him.
"How the hell is that related to the mission?" Xavier barked.
"It is!" Jammy barked back. "Do you know how much time and money I spend on myself? The clothes, the perfume, the soap, the cigars. How can a girl call me ugly?"
"She is a child. Why do you want to appear handsome to a five year old girl? Are you one of those people?" Xavier argued.
Jammy argued in return.
Amidst the argument, Zane looked at Milo.
He was carrying her and she wasn't sure what she should say. Her eyes stayed on Zane.
Xavier had now come forward and the argument had started between him and Jammy.
Zane met the eyes of the other people standing with him and they were all looking at him for ceasefire.
He sighed.
He turned his head at Milo and whispered something in her ears.
Milo heard him and then whispered something in return in Zane's ears.
"Are you telling me to lie, brother?"
Zane raised his brows.
"Just do it this once. Please. For me."
Milo nodded.
"Anything for you."
Zane smiled.
He focused on the fighting Xavier and Jammy.
"Alright. Look, she is saying something."
The fighting stopped.
Jammy and Xavier both turned their heads at Zane.
Milo leaned forward and locked eyes with Jammy.
"You are also handsome. Very much. That's final."
Jammy's eyes lit up.
Milo repeated each word that Zane told her to speak and judging by the janitor's face, it worked.
He stood from the stairs and came in front of Milo.
"Really?"
"Yes. Yes." Milo repeated.
"You are not lying, right?"
Milo licked her lips.
She glanced at Zane.
"Back off." Zane shouted. "She says it's final so it's final. Now don't cry again over this. The diner is waiting."
Zane came back to the front, ignoring Jammy.
The man had saved his life and even Milo's life.
He was brave.
Not once had his voice cracked while talking with the Emberlord.
Yet, one little comment about his face and clothes irked him.
It was annoying if anything.
Zane wouldn't like to babysit such men.
So he ended the debate using Milo and now he could finally get on with the main thing.
He wasted no time and climbed upstairs.
Everyone else followed him and in a few seconds, the stairs ended.
Zane was presented with a corridor and he walked on it.
Walls were on his both sides and on his right, there was only one door.
There was only one door in the whole corridor or the whole fourth floor.
Zane went there and stood in front of it.
He waited for everyone to arrive and when they did, Zane finally opened the door.
All eyes welcomed the view and not just eyes, their noses welcomed it as well.
The smell of food invaded their hearts as many of them began slurping.
A big table was set in the middle with white cloth dawned on it.
Chairs stood around the table and the only decoration the table had was the different types of food.
Milo's eyes lit up.
"Let's go inside, brother!" She exclaimed.
Zane smiled.
But he didn't enter.
Not yet.
"What are we waiting for?" Tesla asked.
"Traps." Jammy answered.
Zane glanced at him.
Jammy shrugged.
"Yes. Possible traps." Zane confirmed. "I mean, where is that priest? And don't forget, we are not welcomed anywhere. Don't take things on their face value. Nothing is good for us. Nothing is free. Question everything if you want to stay alive."
The gutterborns came back to the present.
In front of the food they forgot their place in the world.
Zane's words brought them back.
They controlled their hunger and waited for Zane's final decision.
"It's not that serious, man." Hena's bodyguard said.
Zane looked at him.
"You have not lived what I have lived."
The bodyguard raised his hands.
"Don't get angry. Call for the priest. He must be here. You might be hated but not hated enough for anyone to go against the order of the Emberlord."
"Right."
Zane agreed with the man.
"Hello!" He called.
"Yes!" A voice came back immediately.
Then footsteps.
Then a white robed man stood on the other side of the door.
"You finally arrived. Welcome. Welcome."
The Priest shifted to the side.
Zane saw no contempt on the Priest's face and the man even welcomed them with a smile.
They fear Coin enough to hide their hatred.
Zane turned his head around and nodded at everyone.
They returned the nod and Zane finally stepped inside the diner.
After entering he stepped to the side and let the people behind him enter as well.
"Take your seats." Zane said.
Everyone would have taken the seats anyway as all of them were eager for the feast.
While everyone took their seats, Zane looked around.
It was his first time visiting something like this.
His eyes looked for the exits and there was only one. It was also the entrance.
No windows.
His eyes then went for any kind of weapons the table had and apart from knives and forks, nothing stood out.
At last, he looked in the ceiling and a crystal clear chandelier hung above the large table in the middle of the room.
A door for the kitchen was there.
A platform for drinks was there.
The diner had everything Zane had only heard about.
So if someone attacked us here, it would be a problem.
Zane's paranoia never let him rest but as focused as he was, he was a human too.
A poor one at that.
So food also worked its magic on him and he too went towards the table.
All the chairs had people sitting on them and only one chair was left.
And it happened to be the tallest chair at the head of the table.
Zane stood beside it and everyone watched him.
No one touched their food on the plates in front of them.
The Priest stood in front of the kitchen door at the corner of the diner, watching over everyone.
Zane ran his fingers on the chair and it looked like only the most important man in the table could sit on it.
"Alright."
Zane sighed.
Everyone waited for the gutterborn to sit down but he looked at the Priest.
"Yes?" The Priest asked.
Zane roamed his eyes around each person sitting and then…
THUD!
He kicked the tall chair.
The Priest's eyes widened and Zane gave his first order.
"Bring me the same chair as them."
